Volume 1 Chapter 8

Will coal, like the phoenix, rise from its ashes? Well no, because it never died! The public understanding of coal within the EU is widely off the mark. Firstly world coal production is growing because the demand for electricity generation is rising worldwide. Secondly, because of pugnacious attacks by environmental NGOs, coal is assumed to be destroying the planet. We will see that Clean Coal Technologies are widely available worldwide and that as a result, the use of coal is far from being over. Furthermore the price of coal is very attractive and market supply and demand forces cannot be controlled. This somehow ensures a bright future for these fossil fuels in electricity generation, in spite of all the pressures it faces and which we set out at the end of the chapter.
